Percussion Classes

Generally, ensembles will be classified as either Marching or Concert Ensembles. The marching classifications are divided into the following:

Regional

  • Junior
  • Junior Advanced
  • Junior Concert/Standstill
  • Scholastic/HS Novice
  • Scholastic/HS Regional B
  • Scholastic/HS Regional A
  • Scholastic/HS Concert

National

  • Scholastic/HS A
  • Scholastic/HS Open
  • Scholastic/HS World
  • Independent A
  • Independent Open
  • Independent World

Initial Class placement is determined and selected by the ensemble at the time of event registration. An ensemble may register for the same class or higher, but only one class lower, than the one they performed in at Semi-Finals the previous year.

To assure all performing units are placed in the proper class, ADLA is committed to class promotion, when appropriate. We believe that it is essential to maximize the effectiveness and appropriateness of both scores and commentary and to assure that all units are being adjudicated within the same class as their peers.  Class Expectations Document Link.

Promotion and class placement is primarily based on design, rather than achievement, and is not linked to, or dependent on, the ensemble’s score.  Downward changes can occur as well, either at the request of the ensemble or at the recommendation of the adjudicators. The Promotion Committee will review a video of the ensembles performance and their decision will be communicated to the ensemble’s director/ instructor within 48 hours of receipt of video.  Ensemble will be required to provide a video of the ensembles performance for review of the Promotion Committee.

Junior Classes

To register for any of the Junior Classes, please see local policies and rules for additional information regarding combined schools..  Ensembles whose membership comes from multiple schools must be approved and all performer enrollment will be verified.  Please contact ADLA for more information.

  • Junior – The ensemble will be adjudicated in 4 captions (Music, Visual, Effect Music, and Effect Visual) by 4 judges.
  • Junior Concert/Standstill – The ensemble will be adjudicated in 2 captions by 2 judges. Groups may use marching percussion instruments, but marching or movement is not expected or adjudicated.
  • Junior Advanced – Based on program design, Junior ensembles should register for the Junior Advanced class if they feel they are in the top-tier of Junior Ensembles.  Junior ensembles will be adjudicated using the same 4 sheets as the Junior class.

High School/Scholastic Classes
To register for any of the Regional or Scholastic Classes, please see local policies and rules for additional information regarding combined schools.  Ensembles whose membership comes from multiple schools must be approved and all performer enrollment will be verified.  Please contact ADLA for more information.

The differences between Regional and National-Level Scholastic Classes are the expectations for design.  The National-Level Scholastic ensembles will be adjudicated based on national expectations. Ensembles are classified and promoted based on the design of the show, NOT on the achievement or execution of that design.

All Regional and Scholastic Classes will be adjudicated in 4 captions (Music, Visual, Effect Music, and Effect Visual).

Regional Classes

  • Scholastic/HS Novice – Introductory design. This class is reserved mainly for ensembles and designers that are new to the activity.  Ensembles may not register in the Novice class in multiple consecutive years unless they are evaluated and approved to do so. Novice is a regional class.
  • Scholastic/HS Regional B – Beginning design. This class is recommended for emerging ensembles. Ensembles in this class will typically have 2-3 consecutive years competitive experience in the indoor percussion activity. Instructors and designers will have 2-4 consecutive years designing for the indoor percussion activity.
  • Scholastic/HS Regional A – Basic design.  This class is recommended for established ensembles that may need more time to mature into the Scholastic divisions. Ensembles in this class typically have more than 4 years of consecutive competitive experience, but may be comprised of performers that are less experienced. Instructors and designers typically have more than 5 years of experience, although some may have less.
  • Scholastic/HS  Concert – The ensemble will be adjudicated in 2 captions by 2 judges. Groups may use marching percussion instruments, but marching or movement is not expected or adjudicated.
